Harry Hole has moved to Los Angeles, since there is nothing to keep him in Norway after losing everything that gave his life meaning. There, he is rescued from his alcoholic downward spiral by Lucille, a veteran movie actor who, in exchange for his protection, offers him a roof, a tailored suit, and a pair of luxury shoes.

Meanwhile, back in Oslo, a young woman who had been missing for days after attending a party hosted by Markus Roed, real estate mogul and her sugar daddy, has turned up dead. The whereabouts of yet another young woman connected to him are unknown, for which the police is closing in on the millionaire. An unusual detail over the head of the first victim worries the police… It looks like the signature of someone willing to kill again.

Determined to clear his name, Roed sends an emissary to hire Hole as a private investigator. It is such a handsome reward, that Harry could help Lucille be free of a dangerous Mexican gang. However, he has only ten days to return to his home country and solve the case. The clock is ticking and something ominous, infectious as a parasite, lingers in the air: a moon eclipse is almost upon them, ready to bathe the city of Oslo in red.
