Maggie is a young teenage girl growing up in suburban Alabama. A surprising, grotesque event concerning her best friend leads Maggie down a path of curiosity and turmoil. She must face intensely emotional scenarios that involve rape, violence, and the ethics of decision making. Despite her close relationship with her chain-smoking mother and reassuring father, Maggie ultimately makes her own choices regarding her circumstances. Maggie must achieve a delicate balance of both immense restraint and reckless bravery in order to protect both her best friend and herself from the ungodly people in their small town.
